The Pakistani military says its forces have killed 14 pro-Taliban militants in airstrikes near the country’s border with Afghanistan.

The airstrikes, part of an ongoing military offensive against the Taliban militants, targeted the Alwara area of the North Waziristan tribal region, on Tuesday.

A statement released by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said a number of top commanders were among those killed in the airstrikes.

The semi-autonomous tribal regions on the Pakistani border with Afghanistan have been a hideout for Takfiri militant groups during the past years. The al-Qaeda and Taliban militants use the mountainous border area to launch attacks in both countries.

In June, nearly two dozen militants were killed after Pakistani fighter jets targeted militant positions in Khyber and North Waziristan tribal districts.

North Waziristan is one of the seven regions of Pakistan in its Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and is governed by tribal law.

The Pakistani military launched its offensive against the militants in June 2014, after a deadly raid on the Karachi International Airport ended Islamabad's faltering peace talks with the pro-Taliban militants. The military claims to have already killed nearly 3,000 militants.
