Iraqi forces captured several positions south of Kirkuk after clashes with Kurdish Peshmerga forces who had occupied the oil-rich region.

State TV said government forces had taken control of some areas, including oil fields. Baghdad sent troops towards disputed areas after Kurdistan’s independence referendum last month. Iraq has called the vote as “unconstitutional”.
