China is set to impose sanctions on U.S. companies involved in arms sales to Taiwan. The deal worth over 2 billion dollars is for 108 Abrams tanks, 250 Stinger missiles and related equipment. The Chinese say the arms sale is not simply a business deal and it targets their sovereignty and national interests. They say the U.S. tries to use the Taiwan question as leverage against their country. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Friday, "The US arms sale to Taiwan has severely violated the basic norms of international law and international relations." China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to take it back one day; therefore, any diplomatic or military support to Taiwan would provoke a furious reaction from Beijing.
