Canada have secured their place in the last four of the Davis Cup finals in Madrid, after defeating Australia 2-1.
The opening tie was a contest between Vasek Pospisil for team Canada and John Millman for Australia.
Pospisil exchanged breaks with Millman before edging him out in the first set tiebreak. The 29-year-old Canadian performed a good serving job in the second and broke his Aussie opponent in the tenth game to clinch the match 7-6, 6-4, moving his country within one win of the semi-finals.
In the second tie, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov eased to a 6-3 win over Alex de Minaur in the opening set, but de Minaur fought back and paid him with the same coin in the second to force a deciding set.
De Minaur then clinched the third 7-5 and leveled the result at 1-all to make the doubles a decider.
In the deciding doubles the Australian duo of Jordan Thompson and John Peers dropped the first set 6-4, but came out firing in the second, sprinting to a 3-0 lead.
Canada, comprised of Pospisil and Shapovalov, kept cool and broke back the Aussies twice en route to another 6-4 victory to reach the semifinals.
Canada will now face the winner of Serbia and Russia, on Saturday, for a spot in the championship tie.
