Novak Djokovic is just one win short of returning to number one in the ATP rankings, after defeating an injured Roger Federer in straight sets, to reach his 8th Australian Open Final.

Djokovic twice fought back from a breakdown in the first set to dominate the tiebreaker 7-1.

The Serb never looked back from there, upping his game to win the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3.

This was Djokovic’s 27th win over Federer in their 50th act of rivalry. Earlier, rumors had been swirling that 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer might pull out of the semifinal, after he was hampered by a groin injury in his five-set quarter-final clash against Tennys Sandgren.

Djokovic, meanwhile, who has never lost a Melbourne semifinal or final, remains on course for his 17th Grand Slam title.

However, to achieve that, he will have to play the winner of Friday's clash between Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev.
