Democratic US presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden has blasted Senate Republicans describing them as "so damn stupid" for blocking a $3 trillion dollar coronavirus bill last month.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives had suggested the legislation to provide further aid to forefront workers battling the coronavirus pandemic and bolster the shattered US economy.

Senate Republicans, however, derided the 1,800-page Heroes Act, calling the legislation a “socialist giveaway” by Democrats and claiming the price tag was too high.

Biden, who was addressing the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), said, "If you don’t have people on the job dealing with controlling the virus, then it’s just going to get worse.”

“It passed through the House,” but was blocked by the Senate, Biden insisted, adding that Senate Republicans were "so damn stupid."

Biden, who has repeatedly criticized US President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders for not taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously, pointed out that an increase in state and local funding would allow for every essential worker to receive the needed testing and be provided with the personal protective equipment (PPE) required to fight the spread of the disease.

Biden insisted that the Democrats had been pushing "hard as hell" to fund the local communities to help them fight the pandemic, while the Republicans had been trying to block any increased funding in this regard.

He said it was the federal government's duty to approve any increase in the local budgets.

"The fact of the matter is that every town you work in … they have a budget and they cannot deficit spend. The only operation in the world that can do that is the federal government," Biden noted.

So far, four coronavirus relief packages, including a $2.2 trillion package in March and a $483 billion measure to pump additional funds into a loan program for hard-hit small businesses, have been approved. Meantime, the coronavirus crisis continues causing more Americans to lose their jobs as the US economy shatters under pressure.

Reports indicate Americans were losing their jobs as companies continue to slash positions in the face of the ongoing recession.

Official government statistics from across the country show jobless rates in various sectors have reached levels unprecedented since the Great Depression.
