In the opening round of the US Open, former world number 1, Andy Murray, has survived a 5-set thriller, to beat Yoshihito Nishioka 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-4.

Murray, who was playing his first grand slam singles match in nearly two years after a hip surgery, looked out of rhythm in the first two sets, and relinquished both at 6-4.

He even lost his first service game in the third set, but broke back, and held on to his serves, all the way to a tiebreaker, where he took it 7-5.

The fourth set also went to a tiebreak, where Murray pulled through again, this time at 7-4.

The Brit continued to play some smooth tennis in the deciding fifth, and managed to break Nishioka twice to seal the match with a 6-4, after 4 hours and 40 minutes of play.

He will next meet Felix Auger Aliassime in the next round.
