Canada’s Denis Shapovalov has beaten Spain’s Pedro Martinez in straight sets, to book a place in the third round of the Italian Open in Rome.
In their first ever head-to-head clash, the US Open quarter-finalist, who is 95 places above Martinez in the rankings, faced some resistance, before closing out the set at 6-4.
However, the Spanish qualifier came back strong in the second, and raced to an early 3-love lead, before Shapovalov upped his game, and took the set also at 6-4, wrapping up the contest in one hour and 42 minutes.
The 21-year-old Canadian will have to face Ugo Humbert for a place in the quarter-finals. The Frenchman beat 7th Seed and 2018 quarter-finalist Fabio Fognini in straight sets to make his way to the third round.
