Thousands of people staged a protest in Rome's iconic St.John's square, demanding an end to what they call an instrumental use of liberticidal measures to counter the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative dubbed "Liberation March", was attended by a number of unionists, journalists and small businessmen who called on the government to respect the constitution and protect Italians' health and jobs.
Speakers condemned Italy's executive for spreading fear and panic over Covid-19 outbreak and adopting restrictive measures that are hurting millions of ordinary citizens.
Also on Saturday, another protest was held in Milan. Entrepreneurs and workers from the Tourism sector took to the streets of Italy's industrial and financial capital to denounce that the hospitality industry is on its knees.
Strict anti-COVID-19 measures including the obligatory use of face masks everywhere have been recently reintroduced in Italy in an attempt to contain a rising trend in infections registered in the latest weeks.
The government has raised the fines for refusing to wear a mask to between 400 and 1,000 euros, with police patrols deployed to check that people are complying.
Meanwhile, Health authorities have warned the spread of COVID-19 is accelerating in Italy. On Saturday, for the second day running Italy has registered more than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases.
