Raphael Warnock has defeated Senator Loeffler in Georgia's Senate runoff, pushing the Republicans one step closer to losing the majority of the upper chamber.

The US mainstream media, including NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN projected Warnock as the winner shortly before 2 am EST on Wednesday with more than 46,500 votes.

This comes as Warnock, the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, declared his victory in a video after midnight on Wednesday.

“We were told that we couldn’t win this election, but tonight we proved that with hope, hard work and the people by our side, anything is possible,” Warnock said. “So Georgia, I am honored by the faith that you have shown in me and I promise you this tonight: I am going to the Senate to work for all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election."

Neither Loeffler nor Warnock reached the 50 percent threshold needed to win the general election in November, sending the race into a runoff.

The pastor made history with his election win, becoming the first African-American senator to represent Georgia in the Senate. He would also be the first Democrat who wins Senate race in Georgia in 20 years.

Warnock’s victory gives Democrats 49 seats in the Senate, one shy of creating a 50-50 tie with Republicans, which would effectively give Democrats control because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would be the tie-breaking vote. A win for Jon Ossoff, another Democrat candidate, would give the Democrats their coveted 50th seat.

With 98% of the expected vote reporting, Ossoff leads with 50.2 percent -- 2,208,717 ballots -- while his rival David Perdue trails behind with 49.8 percent -- 2,192,347 ballots.
