Jon Ossoff has defeated Republican David Perdue in Georgia's historical Senate runoff election, giving Democrats control of the upper chamber.
CCN projected Ossoff, the 33-year-old head of a video production company, as the winner of the race shortly after 4 p.m EST.
Earlier on Wednesday, Raphael Warnock, another Democrat candidate, also managed to defeat Senator Loeffler (R) in Georgia's Senate runoff.
Neither Ossoff nor Warnock reached the 50 percent threshold needed to win the general election in November, sending the race into a runoff.
The twin victories are enough to give Democrats 49 seats in the Senate, one shy of creating a 50-50 tie with Republicans, which would effectively give Democrats control because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would be the tie-breaking vote.
Ossoff’s victory came at a moment when the supporters of US President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol where the lawmakers were engaged in the process to certify the victory of President-elect Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
Lawmakers in the building were told to shelter inside their offices as an armed standoff was taking place at the House front door.
The doors of the House chamber were locked for safety purposes as the protesters entered the building with reports that an improvised explosive device had been found on the grounds of the Capitol.
