Roger Federer has started his Wimbledon preparations with a two sets to love victory over Ilya Ivashka of Belarus at the Halle Open.

In his first match since withdrawing mid-way through the French Open to protect his body, the Swiss maestro had a hard battle against the Belarusian, but eventually took the opening set in a tie-break.

Ivashka showed some resilience in the second set too, but the 39-year-old veteran used his experience to close out the match with a 7-5 win.

Federer will next meet Felix Auger-Aliassime or Hurbert Hurkacz in round two.
