Revealed: Far-right Israeli ministers eye restoration of illegal settlements in Gaza through genocide

The file photo shows the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes which have decimated entire neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

A former Israeli war cabinet minister has revealed that some members of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition view the restoration of the regime’s illegal settlements in the Gaza Strip as a "key objective" of the 15-month-old genocidal war on the besieged Palestinian territory.

Gadi Eisenkot made the revelation in response to remarks by far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who said Netanyahu’s ministers had in the past “thwarted" prisoner swap deals with Palestinians.

“Ben Gvir is telling the truth, and that is why we left” the cabinet “with a heavy heart, understanding there was no intention to advance the deal," Eisenkot told Israeli Army Radio.

“There are ministers for whom the goal of the war is the restoration of Jewish settlement in Gaza,” the former Israeli minister added.

Ben Gvir has threatened to resign if Netanyahu’s cabinet agrees to a ceasefire deal being brokered in Qatar, which includes the release of Israeli captives in the blockaded territory.

Ben Gvir’s remarks drew sharp criticism from the relatives of the captives and the political opposition who have long accused Netanyahu of refusing to accept a ceasefire agreement to preserve his coalition.

Strongly criticizing the reported plans of the Israeli regime’s withdrawal from Gaza, Ben-Gvir said it was “capitulation” to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

In November last year, Israel's housing and construction minister Yitzhak Goldknopf called for the re-establishment of illegal settlements in the Gaza Strip after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant over their genocidal crimes in the besieged Palestinian territory.

The Israeli regime evacuated its illegal settlements and military presence from Gaza in 2005 following a disengagement plan. However, in recent months, Israeli ministers and lawmakers have renewed calls to reestablish settlements in the territory, a move met with firm Palestinian opposition and widespread regional condemnation.

Israel launched its brutal Gaza onslaught on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led resistance groups carried out a historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

However, more than 15 months into the offensive, Israel has failed to achieve its declared objectives of finding captives held in Gaza and eliminating Hamas.

Since October, the occupying regime has killed more than 46,707 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 110,265 others, in Gaza.
