US Senator Bernie Sanders has slammed the US government for enabling Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, reiterating his call to end weapons supply to the occupying regime.
“The United States allowed this mass atrocity to continue by providing an endless supply of weapons to [Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and failing to exert meaningful leverage,” Sanders said in a statement on Friday.
“As this horrific war hopefully comes to an end, the suffering of the Palestinian people remains. This ceasefire is just the first step,” he said.
He reiterated that the military support took place in clear violation of the US and international law, and added, “as Americans, we must grapple with our role in this dark chapter.”
“This must not happen again. Future political leaders should learn from this terrible lesson and restore respect for our own laws and moral principles,” Sanders emphasized.
Continuous US military aid to Israel despite warnings by the United Nations that a humanitarian disaster had spread across Gaza highlighted Biden’s uncompromising support for Israel.
In November, the Senate rejected a bill introduced by Sanders that would halt a $20 billion weapon sale to Israel.
The legislation came after the regime failed to meet the US-imposed deadline to increase humanitarian aid and allow at least 350 trucks into Gaza a day.
Despite Israel’s withholding humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave, the US took no action.
Back in November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli minister for military affairs Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The US categorically opposed both of these indictments.
Under US law, the country must not give military assistance to foreign security forces that have committed human rights violations. However, the Biden administration refused to stop the transfer of weapons to the Israeli regime.
On Wednesday, Qatar announced a three-phase agreement that will end over 15 months of Israeli attacks on Gaza.
During the first phase of the treaty, Hamas will release 33 Israeli captives in return for humanitarian aid, the gradual withdrawal of the Israeli regime forces from Gaza and the release of Palestinian abductees.
Since the onset of Israel’s 15-month genocidal war on Gaza, more than 46,707 have been killed, and 109,660 others injured, most of whom are children and women. Gaza’s 2.3 million populations have been displaced and much of the besieged territory is in ruins.
