Iran: US designation of Ansarullah 'excuse' for sanctions on Yemen

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Iran has condemned President Donald Trump’s re-designation of Yemen's Ansarullah resistance movement as a terrorist organization, dismissing the move as “baseless” and “contrary to international law.”

In remarks on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the designation only serves as “an excuse to apply anti-human sanctions against the Yemeni people.”

He cited the Yemeni people's "honorable solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians against the occupation and genocide by the Zionist regime", saying the designation is a follow-up to the former administration’s 15-month complicity in the massacre and genocide of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“Such arbitrary, unilateral, and baseless actions further undermine the rule of law in international relations and pose a threat to regional peace and stability,” Baghaei said.

Trump on Wednesday officially re-designated Ansarullah as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), returning the movement to the same status it held at the end of his first administration.

He also threatened to mobilize Washington's regional proxies against Yemen in an attempt to pressure the Yemeni people to abandon their support for Gaza.

Under the new directive, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is required to report to the president within 30 days, after consulting with the director of National Intelligence and the secretary of the Treasury, on the designation of Ansarullah in accordance with US law. Following this report, appropriate actions must be taken within 15 days.

The designation came in response to the Yemeni army’s military operations on Israeli-occupied territories, and assaults on US Navy warships and Israel-linked vessels in the region since November 2023, launched in support of Palestinians being massacred by Israel in the blockaded Palestinian territory.

Earlier on Thursday, Nasr al-Din Amer, the deputy head of Ansarullah’s press service, said that the US’s recent classification of the popular movement as a terrorist organization would ultimately fail, just like their attempts to confront the group at sea which have ended in defeat.

Ansarullah has already clarified that it does not have any investments, bank accounts, or businesses in the US and that its members do not travel to the country.
