North Korea has successfully launched strategic sea-to-surface cruise missiles, according to state media KCNA.
KCNA reported on Sunday that the sea-to-surface guided cruise missiles “precisely” hit their targets.
The launched missiles hit their marks after traveling along the 1,500-kilometer elliptical and figure-eight orbits, the report said.
There was “no negative impact on the security of neighboring countries,” it added.
Where the launch had taken place was not specified in the report.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who oversaw Saturday’s test, said the nation’s armed forces were “being perfected more thoroughly” by developing more advanced weaponry as a deterrence against our adversaries, KCNA reported.
This was North Korea’s first missile launch since US President Donald Trump resumed office on Monday.
During his first term in office, Trump met with Kim three times.
Trump, who recently told reporters that he aims to resume peace talks with Kim, has described his relationship with Kim as “very, very good.”
However, his newly-appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has in the past described Kim as a “dictator.”
Trump’s administration is said to be weighing the possibility of reopening “direct talks” with Kim.
During his presidency, Trump made history as the first US president to visit North Korea in decades.
