A spokesman for the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has praised the return of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the north of the Gaza Strip after 15 months of Israeli genocidal war as the definite sign of the Tel Aviv regime’s defeat in its onslaught against the territory.

“[Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu failed in anything he had declared during the war on Gaza. The return of displaced people marks a clear manifestation of such a fact,” Sami Abu Zuhri said on Monday night.

The remarks came after Gaza’s Government Media Office said more than 300,000 people had crossed from southern Gaza into the north. The displaced Palestinians crossed the once-closed Netzarim Corridor, and returned to their destroyed homes for the first time since the war began on October 7, 2023.

An official from Gaza’s Government Media Office said at least 120,000 tents were needed to shelter the displaced people returning to the north.

Abu Zuhri noted that Netanyahu has no option but to honor the ceasefire agreement with Hamas and the deal for exchange of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli captives.

He also dismissed as hollow the Israeli leader’s warning that the Tel Aviv regime would return to war in Gaza if the second phase of the prisoner swap and ceasefire agreement fails, emphasizing such remarks were made for domestic consumption.

“The mediators have begun verification processes to begin the second stage of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. We have information that the United States is willing to advance the second phase. We are fully prepared to successfully carry out all terms of the Gaza ceasefire deal and implement what has been agreed upon,” the senior Hamas official stated.

He emphasized that the future of the Gaza Strip is an entirely Palestinian issue, stating that the so-called “day-after plan” and exclusion of Hamas from Gaza's post-war governance no longer exist.

Abu Zuhri also said that his group welcomes the establishment of an administration which is determined to rebuild Gaza and hold elections.

“The obstacle to broad consensus is the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, which failed to pursue justice for Gaza. We won’t allow any party to assume guardianship,” he said.

“Gaza does not suffer from an administrative vacuum,” the Hamas spokesman noted. “We welcome the formation of a government elected by common consent.”
