Ayatollah Khamenei pardons, commutes sentences of 1,526 prisoners

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei has issued pardons or commuted sentences of hundreds of prisoners.

The Leader pardoned or commuted the sentences of 1,526 inmates, according to an announcement released on Thursday.

Ayatollah  Khamenei regularly grants prisoners pardons on special occasions per Article 110 of the Iranian Constitutional Law.

The Leader’s prison pardons this year aim to mark the New Year holiday in Iran and the anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Republic. They also coincide with the main Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, signaling the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The pardon came in response to a request by Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei to suspend or mitigate the sentences of the inmates deemed eligible for parole or reduction of prison sentence.

The Leader can pardon or reduce the sentences of prisoners upon the request of the chief of the judiciary.

However, the law does not apply to inmates who have committed serious offenses.

Prisoners who have been convicted for criminal offenses such as assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery, armed or organized drug trafficking, armed trafficking, abduction, rape, bribery, and embezzlement do not receive forgiveness from the Leader.
