IAEA report on Iran hackneyed, legally flawed: Iranian official

Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI)

An Iranian nuclear official says the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tehran’s nuclear program is repetitive and legally flawed.

The report “is repetitive, and when compared with other reports by [IAEA Director General Yukiya] Amano over the past few years, it is the repetition of certain baseless issues, demands and allegations,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Saturday.

Asked about Amano’s repeated claim that the IAEA has not been able to comment on Iran’s ‘unannounced nuclear activities,’ Kamalvandi said the issue can be addressed within the framework of the Additional Protocol to the IAEA’s Safeguards Agreement.

The Iranian official also rejected the idea that the IAEA was authorized to inspect any Iranian site at any time and said “even the Additional Protocol would not give the IAEA such a right, neither about Iran nor about any other country.”

A quarterly report issued by the IAEA on Friday claimed that Iran has not yet provided the body with new practical measures to be implemented in the next stage of the IAEA probe.

On Friday, Iran’s Ambassador to the IAEA Reza Najafi said part of the recent IAEA report about Iran’s cooperation with the agency is “incomplete,” as the Islamic Republic has cooperated with the UN nuclear body more than reflected in the report.

“From the 18 practical measures [on which] we agreed with the agency, we concluded 16. Two remaining practical measures are under discussion,” Najafi told Press TV in an exclusive interview.

He added that Iran had discussed the two remaining practical measures with the IAEA officials and had “provided some clarification with regard to those two issues” during recent meetings with the agency’s officials in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
