Press TV has interviewed Paul Larudee, a co-founder of the Free Palestine Movement, in San Francisco to discuss a new Intifada (uprising) which is in the offing in the occupied territories.
What follows is a rough transcript of the interview.
Press TV: What do you think is the importance of the Intifada? And is it really the only way to liberate Palestinians from the Israeli occupation?
Larudee: Well we know from two Intifadas in the past that despite the heroic bravery of the Palestinians, it requires a lot more in order to actually achieve freedom and I think Khaled Meshaal alluded to that and it is going to take a sustained effort; it is going to take a massive effort. It really requires all segments of the society to resist in many different ways and, basically, to make life extremely miserable and in fact intolerable for the Israeli occupiers.
Press TV: Paul, you are talking about a third Intifada and we have also seen efforts by thousands of people around the world as solid push to bring the Palestinian case to the forefront. Why has it not been enough?
Larudee: It has not been enough because all of those who are involved in it do not constitute enough people to make it happen and they are not willing to go to the lengths necessary to do that. Certainly, the Palestinians have the means to make Israel pay a very big price for this ethnic cleansing and oppression and domination. But of course, the Palestinians also could pay a very big price. Furthermore, there are not enough allies of the Palestinians in the world that are ready to help them to the extent necessary to achieve this liberation.
Even now, although the situation is improving, the Palestinian struggle is better known and there is more sympathy than there was even ten years ago. Still, it is going to take an awful lot more.
Press TV: And then let’s talk about the role of the media. What do you think about the moral crisis in mainstream Western media on the subject of Palestine?
Larudee: Well you see, you are an example of what the media can do to bring awareness to everyone. Press TV is and there are other media ...RT and there are many groups in the world that do this. But in the West, the media is heavily censored and controlled. It is essentially the official press of the governments and the governments are heavily controlled by the Zionist interests especially when it comes to the Middle East. Maybe the Zionists are not very influential in Latin America, but certainly in the Middle East coverage they dominate it. And since the Western countries, the powerful countries dominate the entire world, it almost does not matter what the rest of the world thinks. This is the problem. So we have to be resourceful and to use what we can to make life as difficult as possible for Israel.
