Syrian army, allies enter Palmyra

The Syrian army and its allied forces have entered the Daesh-held city of Palmyra in the central Homs province. The operation to liberate Palmyra came after this week’s offensive which saw the army taking over hilltops surrounding the ancient city. Footage released by state TV shows government troops, backed by Russian airstrikes, entering residential areas and a famous palace in the southeastern edge of the city. The army has cleared all roads leading to Palmyra from mines and explosives while fighting continues inside the old city. Troops have also been trying to protect iconic monuments and archeological sites. Palmyra, which is on a UNESCO world heritage list, fell to Daesh terrorists in 2015.
