The people of Afghanistan mark the religious and historic event of Arbaeen each year to express their solidarity with Imam Hussein (AS). He was martyred along with his faithful companions in an unequal battle against the tyrant of the time more than 13 centuries ago.
This year, people in Afghanistan have preferred to mark the event inside mosques, cultural centers and other religious sites due to serious concerns about security threats mainly coming from the Daesh terrorist group as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participants in the rituals look to the commemoration ceremonies of Arbaeen as a reminder of Imam Hussein’s anti-tyranny ideology.
As one of the objectives of Imam Hussein's uprising was to fight tyranny and injustice by spreading awakening among people, Afghans believe that they can learn how to say no to injustice via the lessons of Arbaeen.
In a religious society like Afghanistan, commemorating events like Arbaeen highlights the memory and sacrifices of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him)'s grandson and his companions aiming to bring peace and brotherhood.
