Barcelona Open: Nishikori beats Pella

Kei Nishikori of Japan has escaped early elimination in the Barcelona Open after beating Guido Pella of Argentina 2 sets to 1.

The 2-time former champion suffered a shocking defeat in the opening set after PeYa managed totake it 6-4.

The Japanese fought hard to come from behind and win the second set in the tie-break to send the contest to a decider.

Nishikori then found his rhythm and easily grabbed the final set 6-2 to reach the next round, where he will meet Cristian Garin of Chile.

Elsewhere, Egor Gerasimov of Belarus made a successful debut in Barcelona with a straight sets win against former top five star Jo-Wilfried Songa of France.

It was a close contest, but the Belarusian took the first set 7-5, before winning the next 6-1 to wrap up the match after 80 minutes.

Grasimov will next meet Yannik Sinner of Italy in the second round.
