Crew forced to abandon vessel off Yemen's southeastern coast: UKMTO
Britain’s maritime safety agency, UKMTO, says it has received a distress call from a vessel off Yemen's southeastern coast, with its crew forced to abandon the ship due to flooding that could not be contained.
The agency reported that the vessel suffered flooding 96 nautical miles southeast of Yemen's coastal city of Nishtun on Sunday, without specifying the cause of the incident.
"This has forced the master and crew to abandon the ship. They have been recovered by an assisting ship," UKMTO said, adding that the flooded vessel "remains adrift".
Earlier in the day, UKMTO reported an attack on a merchant ship in the Red Sea near Yemen, saying an aerial drone damaged the vessel though there were no injuries.
The agency went on to say that the attack occurred about 65 nautical miles (120 kilometers) west of the western strategic Yemeni port city of Hudaydah.
"The Master of a merchant vessel reports being hit by an uncrewed aerial system (UAS), resulting in damage to the vessel. All crew members are reported safe, and the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," it said, adding that authorities are investigating the incident.
On Friday, UKMTO reported explosions near a ship east of the Yemeni port city of Aden. The agency, which did not identify the vessel, said the ship was able to continue its journey and “the crew are reported safe.”
Also on Saturday, Yemeni Army’s Spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said the country’s naval units had conducted a missile attack on the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea.
Saree said that the USS Eisenhower was targeted “directly” by several ballistic and cruise missiles.
Yemen’s military has been targeting Israeli ships and those bound for Israeli ports since November last year in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza which has been subject to over eight months of war that has so far killed nearly 37,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 86,000 others.
The Yemenis have made it clear that they will not hesitate to carry out qualitative operations against all hostile targets in defense of their homeland and reaffirmation of their unwavering support for the Palestinian nation.
Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza end.
