The Iranian men’s Under-19 national volleyball team has lifted the trophy at the end of a three-nation friendly tournament in Italy, having stayed unbeaten in its final showdown and trounced the Italian side in straight sets.
On Tuesday, the Iranian outfit overcame the host nation 3-0 (25-22, 26-24 and 29-27) in the final match of the sports event staged in the Italian capital, Rome, to be crowned the champion.
The young Iranian sportsmen conceded a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 26-28 and 22-25) loss to Italy’s side the previous day, but qualified for the last fixture of the tournament as they had thrashed the Russian team 3-0 (25-19, 25-22 and 25-22) in their opener on July 4.
The Iranian squad, accompanied by eight officials, will now head to Germany to play friendly games with its German number.
Iran is preparing for the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship, which will be held in the Argentine cities of Resistencia and Corrientes from August 14 to 23.
Iran has been pitted against Poland, Chile, Taiwan and Bulgaria in Pool C.
Argentina, the United States, France, Belgium and Turkey form Pool A, while China, Cuba, Mexico, Egypt plus Italy are drawn in Pool B.
Pool D comprises Japan, Puerto Rico and Germany, and powerhouses Russia and Brazil.
