Iran’s acting foreign minister meets with Saudi top diplomat in Russia
Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has met with Saudi Arabia's top diplomat Faisal bin Farhan on bilateral, regional and international issues.
The two diplomats met on the sidelines of the BRICS foreign ministerial meeting in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
In March 2023, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed under a Chinese-brokered deal to revive diplomatic relations severed in 2016.
Iran officially reopened its embassy in Riyadh in June, followed by its consulate in Jeddah and its representative office with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad also resumed operations.
Bagheri Kani arrived in western Russia on Monday to attend the BRICS 2024 as an official member.
Saudi Arabia is one of the countries the BRICS group has invited for official membership.
BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group accounts for 42 percent of the global population and about 27 percent of both the world's land area and the world’s economy. Iran joined the group as a full member in January 2024.
Bagheri Kani has already held talks with the foreign ministers of China, Belarus, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan and Brazil and the special presidential envoy from the host country.
He has also held a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on utilizing the capacity of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS group to counter the unilateralism and illegal actions of the United States.
