President Xi Jinping has declared China’s “unwavering” support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in a message to newly elected President Joseph Aoun.
The message, which was conveyed by the Chinese Ambassador to Beirut Qian Minjian on Monday, also pledged support for “providing assistance to the Lebanese side in economic development and improving the living conditions of its people.”
China had previously provided more than 60 tons of aid to Lebanon during Israel’s bombing of civilian areas in the country.
Xi’s message comes as the deadline for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon’s border areas looms.
According to the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, all Israeli forces should leave Lebanese soil by January 25.
Israeli soldiers still remain in multiple border towns and other areas along the Lebanese border, with reports saying Israeli troops continue to harass, abduct and even murder civilians.
At least 13 Lebanese citizens have been killed by Israel since the beginning of the ceasefire, including a state security officer.
Israeli forces have also been systematically demolishing civilian housing and infrastructure in the areas under their control, including sports facilities, farms, and roads.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, Israeli attacks on Lebanon since October 7, 2023 have left more than 3,583 people dead, most of them civilians.
