‘Sensitive’ UK military documents found scattered on Newcastle street: Report

The photo by BBC shows confidential papers spilled from a black bin bag on a Newcastle street, Northeast England, on March 16, 2025.

Piles of confidential military documents found scattered on a residential street in Newcastle, Northeast England, have sparked concerns about potential security risks for the individuals named within them.

Britain’s state-run broadcaster, the BBC, reported that the documents, which were found spilling out of a black bin bag in the Scotswood area on March 16, include details such as soldiers’ ranks, email addresses, shift patterns, and weapon issue information.

The BBC said some of the documents were marked “Official–Sensitive,” meaning they are not meant for the general public, and some others contained material related to accessing weapons storage and an intruder detection system.

The papers, ranging from general medical advice and ingredient order sheets to personal identification numbers, appear to be linked to British Army regiments and barracks at Catterick Garrison.

The "official sensitive" scrap was found in a bush near the rest of the papers.

Citing the British Government guidance, the broadcaster said the documents’ “unintended disclosure or compromise can lead to moderate damage and in exceptional circumstances could lead to a threat to life.”

All such documents should be disposed of in a “burn bag” or by shredding in an approved machine, it added.

Following the discovery, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) launched an internal investigation into the matter, stating that it is looking into the issue “urgently.”

“We are looking into this urgently, and the matter is the subject of an ongoing internal investigation,” an MoD spokesman said.

However, Downing Street has so far refrained from commenting on specific details, stressing that the MoD is currently looking at documents handed to the police, but the matter is the “subject of an ongoing investigation by the Army.”

“As you will appreciate, I won’t be able to comment on any specifics while that takes place, but you can expect that appropriate action will be taken in response to any potential information breach,” a Number 10 spokesman said. “It’s obviously important that that investigation is allowed to take its course.”
